"Giving Instruction"
Game: Evaluation and Improvement
One day I taught "Instruction" to my 8th
grade class ( 13-14 years old) and used games for the strategy. I also wanted to teach my students to
work collaboratively; to lead and to listen in English. After
giving the objective of the lesson that day, I gave some examples of
instruction sentences (Most of them did not know how to say and construct the
sentences). Then, we went to the school field and started to play the game. The
game itself needed 2 persons in a team and I asked 3 teams played in a session.
One person in a team was asked to cover the eyes using a handkerchief. The other person in the team should
use instructional sentences to direct his/her friend to get a box. They
had to give the instruction in English as my examples in the class.
Before the game started, I told that the winner was
the team who could get the box at the first time. So each leader of the teams directed
his/her teammate to where the box was placed. The game ran well
but the leaders were frustrated directing his/her teammate to get the box
because he/she went to the wrong direction. Because of that,
the leaders started mixing English with Indonesian, their native language. They
got more frustrated when the other team got nearer to the box. Then, they
started shouting in Indonesian. Even though I reminded them to speak English many times, they seemed not listening. Every
team wanted to be the winner. Everyone seemed happy but I was disappointed. The
plan did not run well.
In the class I asked them to discuss what they
learned from the game. After that I asked them to write the instruction they
gave and listened on their books. Then, the result was confirmed to their
pairs. We concluded the learning process before prayed in closing.
Before the game started I had imagined my students
practiced the sentences. But then what happened? Yes, you are
right. It was crowded. Every team wanted to be the winner. So what was wrong?
After evaluating the learning process, I found the mistake. What was it? Yes, you are right again. I had given
the wrong goal (Instruction) for the game. I yourshould state that the winner
should be the team that uses good English Instructions and pronunciations. I think this would make the students
practice "Instructional Sentences" clearly and correctly in English.
Next time, I am going to use the same game for
teaching "Giving Instruction" because it is fun and interesting. To
improve the activity, I will tell my students that the winner is the team
that gives good instruction to direct his/her teammate to reach the box. I am
also going to record the moment using video or photograph. Then, I will ask
them to describe the moment using the photograph. Then, upload the writing on
our class blog.
that's my idea for improvement. It may not be perfect, so
I still need your opinion about how to improve it to match 21st century
learning. I look forward to your suggestions at e-mail: sukma230@outlook.co.id
